With 35 years of clinical experience, The International Craniofacial Institute has accepted even the most difficult surgical cases and works collaboratively to solve each craniofacial issue using a team approach that includes quality surgeons and professionals who continually strive for excellence in medical care. Founded by Dr. Kenneth Salyer, the Institute has performed more than 16,000 surgeries on patients of all ages who come from around the world for the exceptional care we provide. The Institute embraces new discoveries and ongoing medical research into the very best technology and surgical practices. This is how we can offer the most advanced surgical methodology available to our patients. Dedicated to helping both children and adults with craniofacial deformities, the International Craniofacial Institute supports each patient with expert evaluations and opinions, skilled coordination of care, and the provision of valuable patient education and instruction. Our surgeons are skilled in the art of aesthetic surgery in order to provide our patients with the best cosmetically acceptable outcomes. We work in collaboration with multiple specialists, including those in cosmetic dentistry, pediatrics, ophthalmology, otolaryngology and neurosurgery. We believe our close relationship with regional hospitals and superior specialists gives us the state-of-the-art advantage our patients require. |
The International Craniofacial Institute (ICI) including the Cleft Lip and Palate Treatment Center was formally named in 1986 and continues to be the focus of the Advanced Surgical Institute and Center for Children developed by Kenneth E. Salyer, M.D. and Medical City Dallas Hospital. Our Center specializes in the treatment of those patients with craniofacial anomalies and is the product of nearly 30 years of medical development and dedication to excellence.
In the 1960's, a French surgeon, Dr. Paul Tessier, pioneered the art of craniofacial surgery. He believed and eventually proved that deformities of the skull and face could be corrected with radical and aggressive treatment. It was discovered that when anomalies are caused by a defect in the underlying structure of the skeleton, the skeleton could be repositioned or reconstructed. Since the time of Dr. Tessier, medical advancements both clinically and surgically have continued to improve the care these patients receive.
As the successful treatment of these deformities continued, the medical community recognized the importance for an experienced multidisciplinary team approach for optimal care. Because of its extreme complexity, craniofacial surgery should only be performed by the most trained and dedicated surgeons in highly specialized centers where the needs of these patients could be met.
Dr. Salyer recognized the need for such a center in the U. S. He established Dallas' first craniofacial surgery center in 1971 and shortly thereafter performed the first intracranial procedure in the Southwest U.S. Today, ICI is recognized nationally and internationally as one of the most advanced centers for craniofacial and cleft lip and palate treatment. Patients from every state in the Union and 48 countries around the world have received treatment at the Institute.
Known for innovative treatment of the most difficult cases, the center has attracted many surgeons from throughout the U.S. and abroad for training in these advanced craniofacial techniques. Also, the center's experts share their knowledge and experiences with the world's surgical community through the publication of books and articles and by lecturing world wide.
Through ongoing research, the ICI experts remain on the academic forefront and continue to develop new and more effective techniques for the treatment of craniofacial anomalies. This commitment to training, education, and research has led to the creation of a surgical fellowship at the Institute to train one gifted young surgeon each year in the art of craniofacial and cleft reconstruction. The fellow also assists in continuing clinical and experimental research and publishing of medical scientific material.
Built upon the principles of excellence, ICI has developed a highly skilled team which allows for the treatment of the most complex craniofacial conditions. The Center is dedicated to children and adults with craniofacial deformities and provides care for the whole patient by surgically correcting physical and functional problems and by providing education and support to patients and their families.
