Interests, Techniques, and Training

Dr. Elfar is a Board-Certified plastic surgeon who practices both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery with special interest in pediatric craniofacial anomalies. Dr. Elfar received his plastic surgery training at Cooper University Hospital of Rowan University in New Jersey. During his training, he had immense exposure to the breadth of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery with emphasis on cleft lip/palate, maxillofacial trauma, and microsurgery.

Education

Dr. Elfar attended his medical school in Egypt. After graduation, he continued to complete a surgical internship, a surgical residency training, and a Master’s in Science. After being certified as a surgeon, he was in private practice of plastic and general surgery for a few years.

To further his career, he came to the USA where he started as a researcher at the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of California-Irvine. He then moved to Texas for Clinical Burn/Critical Care fellowship followed by General Surgery residency training at Shriners Hospital for Burns-UTMB in Galveston, Tx, and Methodist hospital Weill-Cornell University in Houston, Tx, respectively. Dr. Elfar then received his Plastic Surgery training at Cooper University Hospital of Rowan University in New Jersey.

Writing and Speaking

Since his medical school, Dr. Elfar has been an avid researcher. He has been involved in several research areas including, medical education, face transplant, burns, and wound healing. He also has several peer-reviewed publications and co-authored several book chapters. He has been an invited speaker and has presented nationally and internationally.

Professional Qualifications

Dr. Elfar’s distinguished career spans numerous prestigious academic and leadership roles. He began as a clinical instructor at Rowan University in New Jersey and progressed to an assistant professorship at SUNY Upstate Medical University in New York. Currently, he serves as an adjunct professor at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York.

In addition to his academic contributions, Dr. Elfar has held significant leadership positions. He has been a member of the American College of Surgeons’ committee on applicants for the New York chapter, served on the Ethics Committee of the American Burn Association, and acted as a national faculty member for the Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) program. His administrative roles include directing the Clark Burn Center, the Skin Bank, and the surgical outpatient clinics at SUNY Upstate Medical University. Dr. Elfar also contributed his expertise to the Burn Foundation of Central New York’s advisory board and has served as an expert witness in New York State.

Dr. Elfar is an active member of several national societies, including the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Society of Critical Care Medicine. He is a past member of the American Burn Association and holds board certifications in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. With over 30 years in clinical practice, Dr. Elfar’s career reflects a deep commitment to both education and patient care.
